Thoughts:
San Antonio-Alamo KOA is a well laid out park. Upon check-in, an employee showed us to our site. The roads are wide and smooth. The sites are gravel, but fairly level. The overall grounds are maintained. There is a heated swimming pool, playground, rec room and computer for the campers’ use. There are also trails for walking that are adjacent to the park. There are also additional improvements being made to the park.
The front desk personnel were very helpful and friendly, both on the phone when I called with a question and in person when we checked in.
The camp store is well stocked and very clean and organized. Aside from t-shirts and RV supplies, they also stocked milk and other dairy products as well as a good selection of non-perishable food, in case you forgot anything.
The RV Park is on the bus line and a schedule is available at the front desk. Since we tow a car, we did not use the bus, but it would be convenient for anyone who needed it. Coming from Houston, the park is very conveniently located right off of I-10 on the east side of town. It allowed us access to the sights of San Antonio without having to navigate all the way through town in our coach.
The immediate area around the RV park is mostly industrial, but the park has a security gate and the area is quiet. We never had a second thought of leaving our belongings or walking around the park.
For satellite dish users, we could not pick up all three satellites, but were able to pick up partial coverage. Not sure if there were obstructions or weather conditions that were the problem.
What to do once you get there:
There are tons of things to do in San Antonio.
Fiesta Texas is located about 30 minutes from the RV park. On our visit, the lights for Holiday in the Park were already up, so we visited on one of our evenings. As a side note: We purchased season passes for the theme park. For an additional price of $15/person, we can visit the park (and several others) as many times as we like through the end of 2016.
For Black Friday, we spend the day visiting the Alamo, River Walk and Witte Museum.
The Alamo and River Walk were conveniently located about 20 minutes from the KOA. For first time visitors, both of these attractions are must sees. There are tons of restaurants and bars along the River Walk. There are also barge tours that take up along the river and offer interesting information.
The Alamo is a very interesting historic site, especially for anyone who has seen movies on tv or studied Texas History. There is no admission charge for a self tour. Though there was a line to get in, it moved quickly. There are guided tours as well as audio handset tours available for a charge.
The Witte Museum has several different areas. At the time of our visit, the Bodies Revealed Exhibit was being offered at the museum. It was both interesting and a little strange. There are also exhibits on Texas History and an interactive area for kids. Currently, a lot of construction is going on to expand the museum and we look forward to visiting again after the expansion is complete. We purchased a Family Membership to allow us to visit the Witte again, as well as other museums that are part of the same association.
On our Thanksgiving visit, the weather wasn’t very cooperative for outside activities with scattered showers and then turning cold, but it was still an enjoyable stay. We will not hesitate to stay at the San Antonio-Alamo KOA on our next visit to San Antonio.
