Thoughts:
From Houston, this is park is approximately 5 hours including a couple of gas/restroom stops. The drive is mostly freeway and not heavily congested. The park is located with easy freeway access, perfect for an overnight stay. We made this trip as part of a longer trip (See Thanksgiving in the Desert under Longer Adventures), but it could be done over a long weekend. We will plan to stay here anytime our travels bring us this way.
The park is well kept and easy to navigate. Upon check-in, the staff was friendly and even had dog treats for our pups. We were escorted to our site (a service we always appreciate). The park has trash pick up at your site. They also sell propane for both travel trailers and motorhomes.
The river was a short walk from our site. It is very peaceful. In the summer, there is swimming in the river. There is also a pool and playground for the kids.
On this trip, we used the park cable that came in well.
What to do once you get there:
About an hour west at exit 392, we visited the Caverns of Sonora in Sonora, TX. The Caverns are very interesting and a great day trip. It should be noted that the Caverns have a paved paths, but do include some fairly steep inclines and a lot of stairs. While well worth the trip, but sure to account for the age and any physical limitations of the people in your party. The admission price is $20/person for 12 and over. Ages 4-11 are $16/person. The tour takes about 1 hour 45 minutes. Also, as their website notes, this is a warm cave, so leave the jackets and sweatshirts in the car.
After the Caverns, we stopped for lunch at Sutton County Steakhouse in Sonora. It was good home-style cooking and friendly waitstaff.
On the trip back to the RV Park, we detoured to visit Ft. McKavett. It is an interesting visit to see the museum and various buildings on the site. Be sure to visit the visitor center first for a better idea what you are looking at as you walk around the grounds. There is a $5/person admission fee.
We only had one day to look around the area and I’m sure there are other activities and attractions in the area. The RV park has a nice park guide that list local businesses and additional places to visit.
Tips:
If you are arriving after the office closes, they have a very efficient system for late arrivals (with or without reservations).
