Thoughts:
The Fredericksburg RV Park is well laid out,The roads are wide and smooth. The sites are gravel, but fairly level. The overall grounds are maintained and very clean. There isn’t a swimming pool or playground.
The front desk personnel were very helpful and friendly, both on the phone when I called with a question and in person when we checked in.
The free cable tv is very clear and offers a good variety of programming. The park map includes the channel list and there is a guide channel with the service, so you can see what is coming on.
For satellite dish users, we could not pick up all three satellites, but were able to pick up partial coverage. There was a small tree that may have been the cause, In any case, the cable worked so well that we used it most of the time.
What to do once you get there:
Fredericksburg is known for the numerous wineries that have popped up around it. We aren’t wine drinkers, but I have heard from other people that there are some really good ones.
The RV park is located about 1 mile from downtown, so access to the town square area with interesting shops and restaurants is close.
We went to the Fredericksburg Trade Days (Fredericksburg Trade Days.com). There are lots of vendors with various handcrafted, antique and mass produced items. The parking is $5.00 for the whole weekend, We spend about 2-1/2 hours wandering around looking and the items.
After Trade Days, we drove about 30 minutes east to Johnson City. This small town is the birthplace and long-term residence of President Lyndon B. Johnson. We stopped for lunch at a comfortable local restaurant called The East Main Street Grill. They serve lunch and dinner 6 days a week (according to their website, they are closed on Tuesdays). The food was good and portions generous.
We walked down the street and looked at an antique store/art gallery. There were a lot of interesting items. We even picked up a small folding table that we will use as a side table in the RV. Just needs a new coat of paint and it will work great!
Finally, we finished out our day with a trip through the Lyndon B. Johnson State and National Park. Stop by the Park Headquarters to get your free day use permit and a map. The majority of the tour is driving through the Johnson Ranch. There are markers along the way to give details of the ranch and facts about President Johnson. This is still a working ranch and there is the opportunity to experience more details of the ranch life. We chose to skip that part since we didn’t want to miss the tour at the end and it was getting late in the day. At the end of the driving tour, there is an airplane hanger and airplane as well as the Johnson Residence and several of the cars owned by the Johnson Family over the years. There is a $3 admission for the guided tour of the Texas White House. The ranger who led tour was very informative and knowledgeable.
Get out and enjoy the Texas Hill Country. There’s tons to see and do!
