Thoughts:
Cave Country RV Campground is a conveniently located and very well maintained campground. The sites are well laid out to allow even large RV’s easy access. Upon check-in, we were escorted to our site and set up was easy with the long level sites. There is space between sites, so you never felt crowded even when there were people on both sides. The cable tv and WIFI worked well. The RV park is within walking distance to fast food and a convenience store (although to reach the store you do have to cross a large road). We used the laundry facilities and they were clean and in working order.
For satellite dish users, we didn’t hook up our dish on the trip. The park cable is good, so we went that route.
What to do once you get there:
Cave Country RV Park is located very close to Mammoth Cave National Park. We visited the park on two different days and took two very different cave tours (Domes and Dripstones Tour and the Historic Tour). They were well done and very interesting and informative. A word of caution (and the park rangers will emphasize this before the tour), read the descriptions of the tours carefully. For the two tours we took, there were a lot of stairs and some tight spaces. The pace is leisurely and the paths well laid-out, so you don’t have to be a marathon runner to do it, but if you can’t climb stairs or really don’t like tight spaces, you should be sure to pick your tour accordingly. Otherwise, plan to have a great experience. Photography is allowed, but flashes are not.
There are tons of nature trails in the park, but we didn’t use them on this trip.
We also spent time in Bowling Green (approximately 30 minutes from the RV Park). Shopping and restaurants are abundant in the city. During our time, we visited ate lunch at Jerry’s Restaurant (660 Interstate Dr, Bowling Green). The food was good and the service outstanding. After lunch, we went across the street to the National Corvette Museum. It is enjoyable for everyone. As you walk through the museum, you get a sense of the history of the Corvette and see some great cars. A few years ago, the museum had a sinkhole swallow up a large section of one of their showrooms. The cars that fell in the hole are on display as well as a detailed account of what happened (including the security camera footage of the event while it happened).
We also took the Lost River Cave Tour. It is an interesting boat ride. Go early in the day to avoid a long wait to get on the boats. When we arrived, we bought our tickets and had to wait two hours. During our wait, we did walk the trails and visit the Butterfly Habitat. There is also a gift shop and playground to help pass the time.
Tips: Even in the summer, the Kentucky weather is a little unpredictable. During our stay, the highs were in the 80’s and the low’s in the 60’s, but the weekend before we were told it was over 100, so come prepared for anything.
Bring a jacket and possibly long pants for the cave tours. While underground, it can get pretty chilly.
FINALLY, don’t let the kids get too excited about seeing Mammoths at the National Park. The park is named for the “Mammoth” size of the caves, not because any Mammoths were found there.
