Thoughts:
We are fans of KOA Kampgrounds and Brookeland/Lake Sam Rayburn KOA is no exception. It is a family-friendly park. We saw the owner several times during your weekend visit and all of the staff was friendly and helpful.
Some sites are more heavily wooded than others. We were in site 41 which had trees, but they were placed such that it was not a problem for our slides. The park is clean. There is a pool, two small playgrounds, nature trails and paddle boat/kayak rentals. Laundry facilities are on-site as well as a small camp store. They also sell propane and we would have been able to pull up our RV without any problems.
For satellite dish users, we were able to pick up the part of the satellites, but it took several tries. I think success will vary by site.
What to do once you get there:
Brookeland/Lake Sam Rayburn KOA is a very peaceful place. Surrounded by nature and off the beaten path, this park offers an opportunity to simply relax. In a cooler time of year, we would have enjoyed sitting outside on the patio (unfortunately, it’s August in Texas, so we spend the majority of the day inside).
There is a stocked pond for fishing at the park and a state fishing license is not required.
Also, for people who would like to bring horses, there is a barn and riding trails. Be sure to check with the office for rules and regulations of use.
For people with a boat, this location is nice. Sam Rayburn Reservior is located nearby and we saw signs for more than one boat ramp. We did drive to see the Reservior and it was very large and nice.
Jasper, TX is located about 15 miles away with shopping and restaurants, so if you forgot something or just wanted to go out to eat, it’s a straight shot.
Tips:
Google Maps will take you straight to the park. Once you turn off 96 North onto Loop 149, just follow the signs and it will take you straight to the office.
There is a Quickway Gas Station about 1 mile north of the 149 loop turn off (on 96 North) that we found to be easy access to fill up on the way home, even towing the car.
Life jackets are required for all people renting Kayaks or Paddle Boat. The campground does not provide life jackets for children, so be sure to bring one with you if you plan to rent the boats.
